There’s so much technology flying around these days that keeping up with it can be really difficult. What is interesting to note, however, is that there appears to be a growing trend for more retro-tech these days, with vinyl records overtaking digital sales for the first time and all sorts of brands looking to the past to inform their latest gadget releases.
Who doesn’t remember the first Nokia brick phone that everyone had as their first mobile, or so it seems? The 3310 will always hold a special place in people’s hearts because it was virtually indestructible, had a long-lasting battery and of course came with Snake and now a £50 version of this phone has just come out that’s sure to do well thanks to this interest in all things nostalgic.
Turntables are also doing incredibly well these days, thanks to the resurging interest in old school vinyl records. But don’t think that you’ll be saving cash if you opt for one of these there are models out there that will set you back a cool couple of thousand if that’s what you’re looking for (although, naturally, there are budget options as well for those who want vinyl storage but don’t want to spend too much).
CES 2016 also saw the relaunch of Kodak’s Super 8 video camera, which will no doubt do incredibly well. And we’re also interested to see that the flip phone is staging something of a comeback at the moment, with the likes of Samsung bringing a new model to market. For people who’ve always loved the retro feel of the humble cassette tape, there’s good news as well – limited edition tapes have been brought out by all sorts of bands, from Blink 182 to Taylor Swift so you’d better bust out your trusty Walkman if you still have one!
Last year also saw the release of the miniature replica of the original Nintendo NES, which comes with one controller and 30 classic games built-in, so there’s no need for any cartridge either. Game favorites include Donkey Kong, Dr Mario, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Kid Icarus, Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda and more so you’ll be kept pretty busy.
It certainly doesn’t look as though this interest in all things retro will be diminishing any time soon and with ten months to go until the end of 2017, we can’t wait to see what the rest of this year will bring in terms of nostalgic technology.
If it were us, we’d love to see more retro video cameras come to the fore. Even though our smartphones can take video and it often seems like a really practical option since we always have them with us, having a dedicated video camera with a beautiful retro aesthetic would certainly keep us pretty happy here at Neo Online.
